i got a flyer of the samsung galaxy y a week back and was impressed with the features particularly if you know how cheap the phone is. you get the basics, touchscreen (multi-touch), wi-fi, bluetooth, 3g, camera, and the android platform, which i believe is the selling point of this phone. the android os makes this a versatile phone with thousands of apps to choose from the android market. the samsung galaxy y runs on android 2.3.5 gingerbread.
my globe load tipid plan contract is about to end and i was looking to renew. however, renewal of my contract would not include a free phone which sucks big time. so i opted to get a new my super plan from globe and get the samsung galaxy y for php1,500 at plan Php299 (or you can get it free at plan 499). i was excited to check out my new phone and immediately installed apps from the android market, apps that i've been using on my sony xperia x8 which runs on android eclair. such a shame since many apps require android froyo and up.
sidenote: for those not familiar with the android version history they started with beta, android 1, cupcake, donut, eclair, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, and most recently ice cream sandwich. very fun way of naming versions instead of the usual numbers and points.
appearance wise, the galaxy y is better than the corby and even the galaxy mini which have "plastic" written all over with its colored back covers and rounded shapes. the galaxy y, though it has a plastic back cover, feels metallic to the touch thanks the color and texture of the cover. you'll only notice the plastic once you pop it open to change the battery.
the apps are running smoothly and the touchscreen is responding nicely. except for the fact that its squeaky clean that my finger stops in the middle at times. after installing some must have apps, it's time to play. much to my dismay, i can't seem to find a parking game on the android market on my phone. while i was using my xperia x8, i was frustrated to find out that some games require froyo and up, and even if my android version supports it, my xperia is not multi-touch capable. you could imagine how i was baffled at my fruitless search for that parking mania game. eventually, i ended up playing the overused angry birds just to check the galaxy y's gaming performance.
my xperia x8 would at times hang or slow down while playing angry birds. more so when the white one is involved. though i didn't experience it with the galaxy y yet, i got disappointed by the display. the galaxy y only has a 240 x 320 pixels, 3.0 inches display with 256k colors compared to the 16M colors and 320 x 480 pixels, 3.0 inches display of the xperia x8.
overall, the samsung galaxy y is still a great entry level android phone. but for those particular with the display, you might as well shell out a few bucks more to satisfy your eyes. the poor display would undermine the smooth performance of the galaxy y.
